Office of the Superintendent

Dear LUHSD Community,

As the saying goes, “the days are long but the years are short.” That sentiment rings especially true as we find ourselves at the close of another school year, with graduations just around the corner.  The fourth quarter always seems to fly by – and this year is no exception.  We began with CASSPP testing, quickly followed AP exams for many of our students, all the while enjoying a variety of end-of-year fun celebrations and activities.

Senior activities have been such wonderful events to attend. I want to thank our community for their incredible generosity - more than $286,000 in scholarships were awarded to 340 seniors across our district.  It was so wonderful to see so many seniors recognized for not only their academic achievement but also their character and integrity.

In May, our district hosted the East County Track and Field Special Olympics at Liberty High School.  Students from elementary through our adult programs participated in relay races, javelin throws, and more.   At times, more than 300 students were on the field all participating in different activities with even more cheering from the stands.  Our leadership and Link Crew students played a key role in supporting the activities alongside Special Olympics staff. It was a wonderful day filled with sportsmanship, inclusion and camaraderie.

Our Spring Athletic Season was equally impressive. At Heritage, boys golf and boys and girls track and field earned BVAL team titles.  Boys volleyball and girls softball both reached the quarter finals of the NCS playoffs while baseball and stunt cheer also qualified for the NCS championships. At Freedom, both baseball and softball teams advanced to the NCS semifinals, and Stunt cheer placed third in the NCS championships. Freedom Softball and Baseball teams also earned NCS scholarship pennants for the high team GPAs of 3.53 and 3.46 respectively.  Liberty’s girls softball team made history by winning the Division 1 NCS championship and their baseball, swimming (boys and girls) and boys volleyball teams all secured BVAL titles.   A special congratulations to Dave Fogelstrom, Heritage’s boys golf coach, who was named BVAL Spring Sports Coach of the Year!

To all families celebrating a graduating senior – congratulations!  Completing 13 years of schooling is a major milestone.   It was truly inspiring to witness the letter of intent signings and hear about the diverse paths our students will take next year - whether on to two- or four-year colleges, trade schools or military service. This time of year invites us to reflect on the incredible journey our students have taken and the potential that lies ahead. It is truly a time to celebrate their achievements and to look forward with excitement to their future.

I wish you all a wonderful summer break.

Sincerely,

Denise Rugani
